I am contacting both of you in one email as both of you have offered to help work on the website. Let me first introduce each person...
Daniel -is a PR, web marketing and design consultant who is volunteering his services to re-design and promote our website. He is based in India.
Igor - is a VP of Technology at Morgan Stanley and a website designer/computer programmer. He to is volunteering his services and is based in NY.
Given that each of your strengths seem to be in very important aspects of working on websites, I hope the 3 of us can work together to design and build the best possible one. I am also copying this email to Mark and Anastasia (who are in charge of our leopard project and very good with visual design), Liz (a Natural Resource Econ grad from Columbia Uni...who is working on a PhD in Resource Economics and has been helping SLWCS with PR/marketing) and Ravi (Founder & President of SLWCS) who will help with input on the project.
Please reply to all when emailing about this project and on any new subject lines please put [WRD] so that they are easy to sort (it means "Website Re-Design".)
Please DELETE all old emails when replying as otherwise it all gets very confusing and refer to the blog @ http://slwcs-web.blogspot.com/ for an archive of all the previous messages.
Please see below for my answers to a few questions that you each asked which should help as we go ahead with this conceptualization stage which is the most important. I have attached a filled questionnaire from my old company which was a web design co, based in Sri Lanka and this should help us focus on the questions which Igor asked me in his last email.
Igor and Daniel -we need to set up a timeline with who is responsible for which aspects. I would like to get this site re-done by the end of the year. Some of the core points/tasks to get done are
1. New GUI for the site
2. Incorporate search engine optimization on all the pages and a template system so that the pages are either generated on the fly or easy to update.
3. Re-do the site according to the above.
4. suggest a web based marketing strategy to bring paying volunteers to our programs and to get people interested in our conservation projects.
5. Any other things you all suggest

Nope...these are the sections of the website...the subsections of these are in the long table. This diagram was also meant to be the menu to inside pages.
so you want to re-design the main page to have the menu items directly on the page in circles?
not necersarily...this was just meant to be the menu but the design can change to anything else.
Also, in the other sections, you provide a tree of information; What would you like to be actually displayed on the web page? A tree as you outlined with links to more detailed information? i.e.

Wasgamuwa
Research
Elephants
Each one of these would be pages by themselves and just leads to more and more information...
And then when someone clicks on elephants they see a description of the project as you outlined it? i.e. brief history of the projects, updates, goals of the project, e.t.c.?
well that is more for each project -as in wasgamuwa...it is more to allow ppl to search or look for detailed information on elephants for example in whichever project or research of different types (socio-economic, ecological etc)
When will you have the content for those projects ready to put on the web page?
Each of the people mentioned is responsible for their sections but we will need to give them an outline of what is needed.
Also, similar question regarding fact files; do you want to see the tree on the web page and then when someone clicks on an item it loads the details for them?
The purpose of the document was just to give ideas. We are open to other suggestions.
The question is -as a user of the site (and consider this in the shoes of a researcher, student, funding agency, media, potential volunteer etc) how would you like to see the information? what would you like to find out about? and similar questions...

Hello Mr Chandeep,Looks like this can be done in 2 weeks time - excluding the content part.
That's great but it may take longer as we need to get a lot of input into it.
Let me know more details about your webhost, for me to decide the appropriate CMS for the site.
It is running Linux and has perl/php scripting. It is the silver plan from http://www.webquarry.com/hostingpackages.html
Also what is your current web support team members' qualification or understanding level, this will help in the handing over period.
It is unfortuneatly just me. I started web design when we had < version 1 of netscape...the main issue is that I don't have time to work on the site...the idea (and challenge) needs to be that we can get our project managers to easily post new info on their projects.
Will come back with more questions on the structure and layout.

Let me suggest an additional analysis step prior to jumping in to the design; lets instead of focusing on the visitors of the website and meeting their needs try to analyze your needs;
What are your goals for the website? what do you hope to accomplish with it? Can you come up with a concise list of 3 or 4 items and prioritize them?
1) Raise funding
2) Recruit volunteers
3) Raise Awareness
Knowing your goals and what you hope to accomplish with a web presence will help me tremendously during the design process. At the end of the day, we'll probably need all the data you have listed; however, the order we present it in, and how we let the user navigate through it will be greatly influenced by what your goals are for the webpage.
Lets give this a try if you think it will be helpful!
